How Signing Works

What actually happens when you or a brand signs a contract through Folio and Kit — and what it does (and doesn't) mean legally.

What happens when you sign

You type your full name into a signature field — no drawn signature required, though there's an optional canvas if you'd rather draw one. Typing your name renders it in a cursive signature style, so it reads like a signature rather than plain typed text. You then tick a consent checkbox confirming you intend to be bound by the contract, which unlocks the Sign button.

What we record

The moment you sign, we record your name as typed, the exact timestamp, and the IP address the signature came from. If you're signing as the account holder (the creator), your email is also verified through your Folio and Kit login. If you're the brand signatory, your email is whichever address the signing link was sent to — we don't independently verify that a brand contact actually owns that inbox.

The document hash

Once both sides have signed, we compute a SHA-256 hash of the finished contract and store it against the record. That hash is a fingerprint of the exact document at that moment — if so much as a comma changed afterward, the hash wouldn't match. It's included on the certificate of completion as evidence the document hasn't been altered since signing.

The certificate of completion

Every signed contract gets a certificate, showing:

  • The document ID and its SHA-256 hash
  • Both signatories' names as typed, emails, signing timestamps and IP addresses
  • A short timeline — sent, viewed by the brand, both signatures completed

Creators can download theirs from the contract page. Brands get a public link that doesn't require a Folio and Kit account.

What this doesn't mean

A signature through Folio and Kit is evidence of who signed, when, and from where. It isn't a guarantee that the underlying contract is enforceable, valid in your jurisdiction, or correctly drafted for your specific deal — for the full legal position, see Contracts and e-signatures in our Terms of Service.
